The latest prequel in the Hunger Games saga, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before the events of Katniss Everdeen’s original trilogy, placing it roughly four decades after the most recent story, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The story centres on the fateful year when Haymitch Abernathy, the future mentor to Katniss and Peeta, is selected to compete in the second Quarter Quell, an event that drastically changes the rules of the deadly games. Instead of the usual two tributes from each district, each district must send four, resulting in 48 participants in the arena—the largest number in Panem’s history, twice as many victims, and an even lower chance of survival.
