Litterært nobelvors: Vi leser Anne Carson — a literary gathering ahead of the Nobel Prize ceremony

Date Tuesday 8. December
Time 18:00 - 19:30

Get to know the work of the Canadian Nobel Prize-winning author. How does she make the distant past feel close and alive in her contemporary writing?

On 8 October, it was announced that Canadian author Anne Carson, 76, would be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for “... the outstanding significance her work has had for art and literature since the 1990s”. Two days before the award ceremony on Thursday 10 December, poet and Carson translator Tone Hødnebø and literary scholar Emma Helene Heggdal, who has written a doctoral thesis on Carson’s long poems, join us to explore what makes this body of work so exceptional. Together with BLA editor William S. Mørch, they will discuss Carson’s writing.

Some of the hallmarks of Carson’s literature are its crossing of genre boundaries and literary-historical frameworks, interwoven with ancient myths and autobiographical references. Translator Hødnebø describes the texts as dryly witty and subtle. What effect does Carson have on them personally?

This evening, Hødnebø, Heggdal and Mørch will introduce us to Carson’s universe through examples from her most significant works and offer useful starting points for further reading of the Nobel laureate.
