Det gode ekteskap
A film about a young woman determined to get married
A small but great Eric Rohmer film about a young woman who one day decides she wants to get married. The only thing she lacks is someone to marry.
The second film in the “Comedies and Proverbs” series is an entertaining one, with an original premise: student Sabine suddenly decides, completely out of the blue, that she wants to get married. All she needs is a groom. She breaks up with her boyfriend, quits her job and tries to seduce the busy lawyer Edmond. He is kind to Sabine, but has no interest in marrying her. Nor does he want a romantic relationship with her. Det gode ekteskap is simply one of Rohmer’s most sensuous and inspired films.
Everything within it is well-defined and magically, unexpectedly, illuminating.
Vincent Canby, The New York Times
Only Rohmer could handle such single-minded self-deception and the ultimate realisation of humiliation with such witty tact.
