Aldri annet enn bråk

A 1954 Oslo comedy about the Bråten family

Date Thursday 10. December
Time 18:15

Edith Carlmar’s delightful Oslo comedy from 1954.

The Bråten family live on the top floor of a tenement building in Oslo’s east end. In a single room and kitchen, seven people have to sleep, eat, do homework and live together as a family. Their mother, Hulda, holds the family together, but things get difficult when her 16-year-old daughter wants to stand on her own two feet and her 14-year-old son gets mixed up in something that ends in car theft.

Aldri annet enn bråk comes across as a comedy, but, like the best comedies, it has a deep seriousness as its backdrop.

It is the early 1950s. Society is changing, and so are its people, in a daily life still shaped by the post-war years, cramped living conditions and financial hardship. But there is also optimism and faith in the future. The Bråten family reflects this change, along with the challenges and opportunities it brings.

Edith Carlmar made her debut with Døden er et kjærtegn in 1949. Her feature-film career ended with Ung flukt in 1969.

Of the ten films Edith Carlmar directed, Aldri annet enn bråk was the one she held in highest regard. She had grown up in the same community, among the same people she portrays here with love and respect.

Before the screening, Vigdis Lian and film historian Ingrid Falkenberg Dokka will discuss Edith Carlmar and her films.

“It is not often that one is eager to see more Norwegian film, but that is exactly how you feel after seeing ‘Aldri annet enn bråk’. It is a pleasure to see such a fine, understanding and authentic film.”

Reidar Lunde, Aftenposten

“All credit to the film’s authentic Oslo tone. It rings true and unadulterated.”
