Velkommen til familien — a Norwegian Christmas film
Oscar-nominated Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas invites you to the Christmas season’s most awkward and funniest family gathering.
In «Velkommen til familien», she plays Elisabeth, who lives with her boyfriend Espen and works as a psychologist. This Christmas, Elisabeth is finally going to meet Espen’s family in his hometown of Kristiansand. She has a somewhat difficult family background of her own and hopes her potential in-laws will be warm and close-knit. But the Dvergsnes family is anything but. They can only make small talk about practical matters and avoid, at all costs, any topic related to feelings. On Christmas Eve, the family’s grandmother starts behaving strangely. When no one wants to talk about it or do anything about it, Elisabeth begins to wonder who she is really with.
The film is directed by Even Hafnor and is based on his own Gullstol-winning short film «Small Talk». It has also been performed annually as a play in his hometown of Kristiansand. Apart from Lilleaas, the film features amateur actors only, including Hafnor’s own parents.
