Thorvald Steen / Nils Petter Molvær
A poetry and music collaboration
“Slik en struts betrakter sine vinger” (roughly, “The way an ostrich regards its wings”) is a recently published long poem. It is about running, training, Grete Waitz and death. For two years, Nils Petter Molvær and Thorvald Steen have worked together on the composition and libretto. The result is a joint work with the same title. The music and text, the trumpet and the voice, come together as a greater whole.
Thorvald Steen is one of Norway’s leading authors. Since making his debut as a poet in 1983, he has published more than 40 books in a variety of genres, including novels, plays, poetry collections, short stories, children’s books and essays.
Nils Petter Molvær is an award-winning Norwegian jazz trumpeter, composer and producer. He is considered a pioneer in combining jazz and electronic music.
Steen and Molvær have previously worked together on the film “Kunsten å plystre”. Directed by photographer Per Maning, the film is an intimate portrait of Thorvald Steen’s life, writing and everyday life with the rare muscle disease FSHD. Nils Petter Molvær composed the music for the documentary.
Now they come to Parkteatret with their latest project: “Slik en struts betrakter sine vinger”.
