The Taliban’s return five years ago stripped women in Afghanistan of all their rights. In a society where half the population has lost the right to work, receive an education and express themselves freely, a group of young girls forms a reading circle inspired by Anne Frank’s fate. Director Shakiba Adil weaves her own experience as a refugee from Afghanistan together with the stories of the women in the reading club, who manage to preserve their dignity and hope in a society that has taken everything from them.
