The Match

The Match — documentary screening and pre-film discussion

Date Saturday 7. November
Time 20:15

A documentary about the historic football match between Argentina and England in 1986.

The match was not only a landmark in sporting history. The Falklands War of 1982 was still fresh in the memories of both countries, giving the quarter-final a politically charged dimension. It was also the match in which Diego Maradona scored his famous “Hand of God” goal.

Through archival footage and interviews with players from both sides, the film tells an emotional story about a match that was much more than “just a football match”.

Det kritiske rom (The Critical Room)

Before the film, there will be a conversation about the 1986 match between Argentina and England. Aleksander Schau and Jon E. Sæter discuss what may be considered the most important fixture in international football: Argentina versus England. The two teams have met six times at the World Cup, and their 1986 encounter is considered one of the most iconic matches of all time. How do war, conflict and sporting rivalry shape the relationship between the two national teams today?

Aleksander Schau is a football expert at NRK. He hosts the podcast Fotballklubben with Thomas Aune and has written several books about football.
