The Match
Documentary film
The 1986 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and England in Mexico is best known for Diego Maradona scoring both the “Hand of God” goal and the Goal of the Century. But that is only the most famous reason this match has gone down as one of the most controversial and defining games in football history. Four years before the match at Estadio Azteca, the two nations fought the Falklands War. It began when Argentina tried to take control of the archipelago, which Britain had annexed in 1833, and ended ten weeks later when the British navy forced the Argentines to surrender. And that’s without even mentioning the fallout from the 1966 World Cup quarter-final.
In the documentary THE MATCH, a handful of players from 1986 come together to share their personal perspectives on this much-mythologised sporting event. Among the legends we meet are Gary Lineker, John Barnes, Peter Shilton, Jorge Valdano, Oscar Ruggeri and Julio Olarticoechea, all of whom offer valuable context for the match that cast a long shadow over the Argentina–England semi-final at this summer’s World Cup. This is an entertaining and illuminating documentary about football, international relations and modern myths.
