The Big Lebowski

Suspense and wonderful humour in this highlight of the Coen brothers’ filmography.

Jeff Lebowski—“The Dude” to his friends—is probably the most laid-back person in Los Angeles. While the Gulf War rages on the other side of the world, The Dude is still happily living as if it were the seventies, drinking White Russians and bowling every day with his friends Walter and Donny. But his laid-back lifestyle comes to an abrupt end one day when he is mistaken for a local millionaire. Thugs have come to collect a debt supposedly incurred by his “wife”, Bunny. Meanwhile, Bunny is kidnapped, and the real Mr. Lebowski asks The Dude to act as a courier. The handover goes mostly wrong, and The Dude gets caught up in a web of conflicting interests, gangsters, the police, a handful of German nihilists and more…

The Big Lebowski is another entry in the Coen brothers’ ingenious series of genre experiments, and something quite rare: a remarkably successful blend of laid-back comedy and atmospheric film noir.
