Tango
Film screening
Jealousy, desire and brutality are ingredients in this pulsating tango film from the 1990s.
Mario has just been left by his wife, and starts making a film about tango starring her. Fiction and reality are woven together, and the drama in several of the scenes also refers back to director Carlos Saura’s own life. As in many other dance films, the story is a pretext for the actors to give free rein through intense dance – an arena where the characters let darker impulses such as jealousy, desire and brutality find expression.
Tango is also a reflection on getting old, and on Argentina and its dark political history. In Tango, Saura employs mirrors and image montages to contrast illusion and reality, while exquisite, intense colours – combined with silhouettes and reflections – turn the film into a pulsating dance in its own right.
