Sara Parkman

Sara Parkman – Swedish folk music live

Date Sunday 22. November
Time 19:00

Few artists have transformed a tradition as radically—and as sensitively—as Sara Parkman. Over the past decade, she has been one of the most important forces renewing Swedish folk music, showing how tradition can be alive, political, spiritual and deeply relevant to our time. Through her uncompromising artistry, she has opened up new spaces for Scandinavian folk music and established herself as one of the Nordic region’s most distinctive performing artists and musicians.

Sara Parkman now comes to Parkteatret as part of the autumn tour for the critically acclaimed album «Aster, atlas». The album grew out of a rediscovered faith in art, and became a work about labour, beauty, grief, decay and hope. Herding-call music from the mountain-farm tradition, choral sounds, pulsing electronics and ancient folk expressions meet in a musical landscape that is both grounded and grand.

Since her debut, Parkman has received several of Sweden’s most prestigious cultural awards, including Grammis, DNs Kulturpris and the Ulla Billquist-stipendiet. Her albums and concerts have repeatedly been praised for weaving together tradition and the contemporary, and she has sold out tours across Scandinavia. Through her work as an artist and with the record label Supertraditional, she has helped push the boundaries of what folk music can be.

In May, she played her biggest concert to date, selling out Förbindelseshallen in Stockholm and performing for more than 3,000 people. This summer, she is playing at some of the Nordic region’s biggest festivals, including Roskilde Festival and Way Out West. Just days before this concert was announced, she also performed at Nordic Nights at Grefsenkollen, alongside artists including Mari Boine, Wardruna and Ævestaden.

Sara Parkman’s music perhaps comes into its own most strongly on stage. Her concerts move seamlessly between the intimate and the grand, between community and ceremony. The result feels as much like a ritual as a concert—moving, physical and deeply human.

On 22 November, Sara Parkman takes over Parkteatret with her band and music from «Aster, atlas». This is a rare chance to experience one of the Nordic region’s most innovative and distinctive artists up close.

Egil Kalman plays Norwegian and Swedish folk music on modular synthesizer, bringing traditional melodies, ornamentation and rhythms together with raw electronic sounds. Drawing on traditions including the rich Setesdal tradition, he creates a distinctive meeting between folk and electronic music—entirely live, with no pre-recorded material.

In 2025, he released his debut album Nordafjells on Supertraditional, featuring music from the Setesdal tradition. The album was nominated for a Swedish Grammis in the Folk Music of the Year category.
