Sad Girlz — film

Date Saturday 14. November
Time 18:15

Two teenage swimmers in Mexico are preparing for a major competition while dealing with trauma that changes their friendship.

Paula and La Maestra are best friends, and both are training to represent Mexico at an important swimming championship in Brazil. One evening at a party, Paula ends up alone with Daniel, a good friend and her crush. In the days that follow, La Maestra notices Paula becoming increasingly distant and sad. As they try to process what happened to Paula, the two friends seek answers from both ChatGPT and tarot cards. When the girls respond in different ways, their friendship is put to the test. Paula needs time, while La Maestra feels the need to speak up.

In her feature film debut, writer and director Fernanda Tovar has created an insightful and nuanced portrait of friendship between teenage girls. The film is never didactic or moralising, and is carried by the authentic, intimate performances of its leads, Rocio Guzman and Darana Alvarez. These qualities were recognised at this year’s Berlinale, where the film received both the Youth Jury Crystal Bear for Best Film and the International Jury Grand Prix in the festival’s Generation 14plus section.
