Rehearsals for a Revolution

Date Saturday 14. November
Time 13:15 - 14:50

Yād, the Persian word for memory, also carries the idea that the past haunts the present. In this moving essay film, director Pegah Ahangarani weaves personal accounts together with depictions of major political upheavals to create a compelling portrait of modern Iranian history. Using home videos, archival images, news footage and animation, the film paints a vivid picture of conflict and revolt, from the 1979 revolution to the start of the war with the USA and Israel in 2026. The film is divided into five chapters about resistance, with Ahangarani using people close to her as a starting point for telling a collective story. The result is a powerful account of the intersection between the political and the personal. REHEARSALS FOR A REVOLUTION won the award for Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival this spring, and raises urgent questions about the cost of political revolt under authoritarian regimes. Above all, Ahangarani shows how hope can survive on the brink of revolution.
