At a seaside resort in Normandy, teenage Pauline spends her holiday with her slightly older, recently divorced cousin, Marion. One day, Marion meets an old friend, Pierre, and his friend Henri, a self-assured writer. Pierre makes advances to Marion, while she falls for Henri, who in turn…? Pauline watches it all unfold while experiencing a budding romance of her own with Sylvain, who is her age.
Pauline på stranden became one of Rohmer’s greatest successes, earning him the Silver Bear for Best Director and the critics’ prize at the Berlin Film Festival.
[Rohmer] serves up this innocuous sex roundelay with exquisite control. It’s all low-key conversation, and there’s a thin veneer of chic over everybody.
