In a castle on a hill overlooking the village of Grubbenubben lives Stinghode. He is the first creature made by a mad scientist obsessed with creating monsters. As the scientist makes new monsters, he ignores the ones he made before. Stinghode looks after all the monsters and teaches them to be civilised, never to leave the castle, and not to attract attention for fear of an angry mob.

One day, a travelling circus arrives in town, and its director is looking for his next big attraction. He is captivated by Stinghode and tries to persuade him to leave the castle in exchange for the possibility of fame. Stinghode initially turns down the offer and tells him to get lost, but when he realises that the professor no longer notices him, he accepts after all — much to the other monsters’ dismay.
