Mitt Palestina
Mitt Palestina — a Palestinian family saga
The family saga Mitt Palestina portrays the 1948 catastrophe of Al-Nakba, when more than 750,000 people were driven from their homes in what became the state of Israel—and many were also murdered in the Zionist ethnic cleansing that took place at the time.
We follow a family of orange growers in Jaffa over several generations, placing today’s situation in a broader historical context. When teenager Noor takes part in demonstrations in 1988 and is shot by Israeli police, his mother is led to tell their family’s story. It is a story of change, struggle, hope and despair.
The director, who also plays the mother, is Palestinian-American Cherien Dabis. She portrays Palestinian history in a way that many in the West may find easier to identify with than images of ruins and famine in Gaza. Strong performances and compelling narrative momentum make Dabis’ third feature film a moving and genuinely important historical drama. The film made this year’s shortlist for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
