Ida Hegazi Høyer: Fortellingen om øde
Book discussion
Would you like someone to talk to about the books you read? Deichman organizes reading groups where everyone reads the same book and then meets to discuss it.
In this novel, we meet a small community simmering with conflict, showing how insignificant human life seems in contrast with nature. It is the story of Cato, a dentist who pulls out all his teeth and leaves behind a comfortable life in interwar Europe for a solitary existence on a deserted island in the Pacific. Soon after, he is unexpectedly visited by an adventurous couple who have read about him in the newspapers and want to do the same. Social tensions soon arise on the small island. Things get no better when an eccentric baroness settles on the beach with her male harem. The struggle for survival is fierce, and it is hard to say what poses the greater threat—the people or nature.
