Hearing
Hearing
Ninh installs decibel meters in public buildings and private homes, which means that every day he observes the noise and silence that shape relationships between people. As a result, he is all too aware of the deafening silence in the relationship between his separated parents and in his own relationship with his ex-wife, Ngoc. HEARING tells the story of Ninh and some of the many people he encounters, with poor communication serving as the thread that connects their lives and fates. Vietnamese filmmaker Lê Bảo made his debut with the stylised and atmospheric TASTE (BIFF 2021), which immediately made him a name among international arthouse audiences. His new film is somewhat less experimental in its storytelling, but is every bit as striking in its imagery and distinctive atmosphere. Critics have drawn parallels between HEARING and Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s MEMORIA (BIFF 2021), as well as filmmakers as different as Pedro Costa and Roy Andersson. This is contemporary Asian cinema at its finest.
