Guria
Guria — a portrait of life in rural Georgia
A portrait of a widowed father trying to make ends meet in rural Georgia after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse, the western Georgian region of Guria is struggling with power cuts and economic uncertainty. Here we meet Zuriko, a widower and single father who makes a living as a hazelnut farmer. Together with his friend Gela, he tries to find better buyers for his crop, while daily life brings everything from highway robbers to a growing interest in Maia, the village music teacher.
This charming black-and-white film takes us to rural Georgia in 1992, where economic hardship and small moments of everyday life go hand in hand.
The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this year and is Georgia’s Oscar entry in the Best International Feature Film category.
