Funny Face
Stanley Donen’s charming musical starring Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire.
As always when director Stanley Donen and Audrey Hepburn worked together, the result was seductive and full of joy. Beautiful scenes, great fun and charm define this energetic musical, which reuses, among other things, Gershwin songs from a stage production of the same name.
Funny Face plays with common assumptions about reality and surface, turning the traditional hierarchy between philosophy and fashion upside down while poking fun at both disciplines. This dazzling musical depicts how an American fashion photographer (Fred Astaire) and a leading fashion editor (modelled on Richard Avedon and Diana Vreeland, respectively) transform a bookworm, played by Audrey Hepburn, into the most successful fashion model by taking her to Paris.
The costumes in the film were designed by Hubert de Givenchy and Edith Head.
