Fjord
Fjord — a contemporary family drama
Oscar-nominated Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan face every parent’s worst nightmare in Fjord, a contemporary drama set against a Norwegian fjord landscape and selected for Cannes.
A Norwegian-Romanian family moves from Romania to a small town in Norway. The family of five quickly connects with the local congregation and with neighbours whose children are the same age. When the school suspects that the parents are using physical punishment on their children, action is taken. Fjord is a timely, gripping and thought-provoking family drama that explores cultural differences and the fragile boundaries between privacy and institutional power.
The film is directed by internationally acclaimed director Cristian Mungiu, who won the Palme d’Or in 2007 for “4 måneder, 3 uker og 2 dager”. Oscar-nominated Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan star, reuniting after appearing together in “A Different Man” (2023). The film had its world premiere in the main competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, held 13. – 24. mai, where it won the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or. The film also won the FIRPRESCI Prize and the François Chalais Prize, awarded to films that promote journalistic and humanist values.
The Norwegian producers are Dyveke Bjørkly Graver (A Prayer for the Dying, Min fantastiske fremmede, Syk pike, Verdens verste menneske) and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar (Affeksjonsverdi, Syk pike, Armand, Verdens verste menneske).
