Fanny og Alexander
Fanny og Alexander — Ingmar Bergman's family chronicle
Ingmar Bergman's final major film.
Fanny og Alexander is the chronicle of the Ekdahl family's life. It is told through the sensitive eyes of the boy Alexander, who is in many ways Bergman's alter ego in this partly autobiographical film. With its broad and penetrating depiction of a boy growing up, Fanny og Alexander is also a study of the birth and development of the artistic imagination. The film is inspired by the theatre. References to plays such as August Strindberg's Ett drömspel and William Shakespeare's Hamlet are numerous and clear.
After Fanny og Alexander, there will be no more feature films for me. It could never be more fun, nor more demanding. Fanny og Alexander is like a summation of my entire life as a filmmaker. Feature films are work for young people, both physically and mentally.

Astonishingly beautiful.
