Every so often, an artist comes along with a presence that’s impossible to resist. Fanny Avonne is one of them. But things could have turned out differently. At 17, the Stockholm artist left high school, signed a record deal and moved to Los Angeles. There, she discovered how dreams can be destroyed when they end up in someone else’s hands. Three years later, she returned to Sweden with her confidence at rock bottom, ready to start over.

On «Vad gör jag nu?», her debut album, Fanny Avonne wrote the songs herself, co-produced the album and played much of the instrumentation. Anyone who has experienced losing creative control is unlikely to give it up willingly again. When Fanny Avonne makes the decisions, there are no easy formulas: jazz, bossa nova, folk, soul and pop flow into one another, carried by rich melodies and everyday-poetic lyrics that move through love and chaos with rare directness.

Many first encountered Fanny Avonne through Tjuvjakts hugely popular «Tusen spänn», where her unmistakable chorus became the song’s emotional centre. This was followed by the acclaimed EP «Växtvärk», a Grammis award for Newcomer of the Year and now, finally, the debut album «Vad gör jag nu?». Its twelve songs explore the strange emptiness that can emerge when a difficult period is actually over: what happens when the chaos you’ve almost made part of your identity falls quiet? The result is an album that is as personal as it is musically rich, and has been praised for Fanny’s distinctive songwriting, arrangements and genre-crossing musicality.

In the middle of it all, you can also hear her older sister, Felicia, whose uncompromising advice has made her something of a guide. Fanny has said that she hopes to become the same kind of big sister to her listeners. Next year, she’ll bring «Vad gör jag nu?» to Blå in Oslo!
