Elephants in the Fog
A drama about identity and belonging in Nepal
In a remote village in the middle of Nepal’s jungle, there is a small kinnar community. The term kinnar has mythological roots, but in everyday speech it refers to what in the West we call transgender, intersex and non-binary people. In this part of the world, people of “the third gender” have been recognized as a distinct population group for thousands of years, but that does not mean everything is rosy. The kinnars’ position in society is complicated, to say the least, as matriarch Pirati discovers when one of her daughters disappears in the forest and the local police refuse to look for her. Pirati must take matters into her own hands and set out to search for the missing Apsara in a jungle full of wild and aggressive elephants. In 2007, Nepal became the first country in the world to legally recognize a third gender. Transgender and non-binary people exist all over the world, but their place in society varies between countries and regions. ELEPHANTS IN THE FOG is a compelling, stylistically assured drama about identity, belonging and dreams, set in a place with a culture and natural environment markedly different from our own.
