Douglas Stuart: Shuggie Bain
Book discussion
Would you like someone to talk to about the books you read? Deichman runs reading groups where everyone reads the same book and then meets to discuss it.
The 2020 Booker Prize winner is a celebrated coming-of-age novel set in 1980s Glasgow. The story takes place in the city’s working-class neighbourhoods. In the shadow of a technological revolution and rising unemployment, many people watch their dreams crumble. At the centre of it all is Agnes Bain. As a parent, she wants the very best for herself and her children, and she certainly has high hopes for life. But then the children’s father leaves her, and as Agnes numbs her pain with increasingly heavy drinking, her children leave her, one by one. The last to stay is young Shuggie Bain—the boy who doesn’t fit in and who loves his mother more than anything.
