Angel's Egg
A spellbinding, philosophical anime gem in a newly restored edition.
In a strange world, a little girl meets a young man. She carries an egg; he has a cross-shaped weapon. She believes an angel will one day hatch from the egg. She wants to protect it, but he is less patient.
Ten years before achieving international success with the manga adaptation Ghost in the Shell, Mamoru Oshii directed this singular cult classic. With minimal dialogue and biblical allegories, he creates an immersive, mysterious universe, brought to life through his collaboration with artist Yoshitaka Amano. Angel’s Egg is a beautiful film in which emotion takes precedence over traditional storytelling.
Originally released as an OVA (original video animation), a term for anime made for the video market, Angel’s Egg had only a limited theatrical run in Japan. The newly restored edition premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, bringing renewed attention to one of the most unique animated films of the 1980s.
