Amazomania
Amazomania — a documentary about the Korubo people and documentary filmmaking
In 1996, Brazilian civil servant Sydney Pousselo and Swedish TV journalist Erling Söderström ventured into a poorly mapped part of the Amazon to make contact with the isolated Korubo people. They succeeded in their mission and returned with unique footage of a traditional Indigenous community living completely cut off from the modern world. In AMAZOMANIA, filmmaker Nathan Grossman (GRETA, BIFF 2020) takes a critical look at the footage that once brought Söderström fame and recognition, while documenting his tragic reunion with the Korubo people three decades later.
Today, the Kurobo people no longer live cut off from our world, and their traditional way of life has changed drastically. Grossman explores the role Pousselo and Söderström’s well-intentioned expedition played in this development and, by extension, the historical role documentary filmmaking has played in the colonial project. This thought-provoking and ethically complex film raises important questions about modernity, imperialism, cultural clashes and what it really means to document.
