A Poet
A Poet — a Colombian drama comedy
For Oscar Restrepo, being a poet is not a choice but a calling. Despite very limited success, the middle-aged Colombian continues to devote his life to poetry—which in practice means living off his mother, getting drunk and seething with bitterness at life’s unfairness. When circumstances force him to take a job as a teacher at a secondary school, he discovers the young poetic talent Yurlady and does his best to take her under his wing. But mentoring an underprivileged teenage girl brings its own challenges for a man who can barely look after himself.
A POET was one of the biggest positive surprises at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. With his second feature film, Simón Mesa Soto has made an exceptionally fresh and unpredictable tragicomedy that brings to mind Owen Kline’s FUNNY PAGES and the more light-hearted moments of the Safdie brothers’ films. Acting newcomer Ubeimar Rios gives one of the year’s most unforgettable performances as Oscar, and the grainy, tactile 16mm images make the film feel richly lived-in. This little gem of a character portrait is sure to become one of the festival’s audience favourites.
