9 Temples to Heaven

When Sokol, a man in his sixties, is told by a fortune teller that his elderly mother will soon die, he does everything he can to save her—either in this life or the next. With his family in tow, he takes his mother to various temples, hoping that the list of rituals and ceremonies he has been given can really change her fate.

Warm and melancholic in equal measure, 9 Temples to Heaven is a film entirely without haste, allowing every moment time to breathe.

The film is the feature debut of Sompot Chidgasornpongse, who has worked as an assistant director on several of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s films. It is also Thailand’s entry this year for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
